Week 4 at Tsula Adohi – Autumn Semester 2022
We had the addition of a new student this week, which is always wonderful- it’s amazing to see what new kids offer to the class, in terms of novel games, ideas, and attitudes. We spent more time indoors this week than we have in previous weeks, because now every student has roller skates and there was a big craze for “skate time”, which often leads to students doing math in their skates in order to take advantage of a few minutes of downtime to make a course around the classroom.
This week at Tsula Adohi we saw the students decide that they want more “structured classes”, which led to an allotted “natural science” block of time, in addition to the usual math block. Everyone has also been enjoying creating art. This week we painted with watercolors, tried acrylic paints, and spent one morning making diorama boxes inspired by Joseph Cornell. It was also our lead teacher Peter Kindfield’s birthday, so we made delicious vegan chocolate cupcakes together in the kitchen (and learned measuring and baking processes) to celebrate. Every day has included lots of game-schooling, including chess, and the new addition of croquet. One of our students expressed an interest in learning how to sew, so we began the process of making a dress, from taking measurements,to cutting out a pattern.
Because Fridays are optional at our school, we all chose to take this Friday to check out the Dickson County Fair. After a week of working hard and playing harder, it’s good to get off-campus and just experience the beauty of fun, for fun’s sake! Future trips in the works include visiting the amazing local bird shop and a possible trip to a horse farm for horseback riding. We have so many projects and ideas going into September- this is going to be a very exciting, fulfilling month for us all!
